The New Mission Theater

After talking with an OG Mission District dude over the weekend about the gentrification of the Mission District, the topic of the New Mission Theater came up. As a kid, I remember seeing doubleheaders of Kickboxer 15 and miscellaneous Kung-Fu flicks. The theater was past its prime in my era. Shout it out to my cousin Jennifer who seen a stabbing while Breakin was on. However, Senor Beto was telling me of a time when Cantinflas movies would play all the time and the audience always being 100% Latino. I found a brief history on the New Mission Theater and I wanted to share it with ya'll.


The New Mission Theater was built by Kahn & Greenfield, at a cost of $250,000. Previously, on the same the site, a much smaller Mission Theatre had operated for about ten years. (For the record, the earlier "Mission" opened around 1907, was renamed the Premium around 1911, one of no less than four "Premium" Theatres in SF at that time, and last operated as the Idle Hour from mid-1913 until it closed in order to be transformed into the entranceway to the new and larger New Mission.)

So successful was the New Mission from the very beginning,that it an additional upper balcony was soon added, and it re-opened on November 15, 1917 with "1000 additional seats"; although this figure may be a bit of a stretch, its total capacity did end up as an officially given 2050. When you consider that all these seats may well have been filled, or at least near filled, not only evenings, but weekend matinees as well, you can get a vague idea of just how many people did once go to the movies, and how often. Add to New Mission, El Capitan, the smaller Cine Latino, Tower, and Grand, and you have about 7500 seats on Mission Street alone. All within about six blocks of each other.


The New Mission finally closed its doors on May 4, 1993.

I can't believe that _______ made the Hottest Song In the World

I'm loving all of this new uptempo R&B coming out. The king of using other producers styles (Jermaine Dupri) has done it all too well this time by using that same method. You can hear the Baltimore influence in the drums and the chopped and screwed influence in the chorus. The cherry on top of the cake is the "Dance to the Drummers Beat" sample that is rocked oh so funkily.

My God, for as much as I want to hate these bastards, they made a hot ass record.

I love seeing stars being genuine music fans

Peep this video of Pharrell and DJ Premier talking about Busta Rhyme and his not wanting to take a picture with Baby Bam of The Jungle Brothers. I love the fact that you can see that Pharrel is a genuine fan of rap music. From calling Premier 'teacher' and bowing down before him to his reciting Jungle Brothers songs and his on point impersonations of Busta Rhymes and Q-Tip.

Jose James: A Jazz Vocalist With The Inclinations of a Soul Singer

I feel in love with the music of Jose James as soon as I heard his voice. His voice carries such an amazingly warm and rich tone. Hard yet soft. Distinctively throwback yet fresh and brand new. A Gil-Scott Heron for the future. It's truly organic Soul music for the present.

I stumbled on Jose James via a video of his performance of Park Bench People with Soil and Pimp Sessions backing him. His vocal stylings, voice and performance made me an instant fan. He has since released the Desire & Love 12 inch along with his debut album "The Dreamer".

Best Song In The World

This is surrrriously the best song in the world right now. There is no doubt about it. A Great cover to an already classic Raphael Saadiq track.

This is all Cosmo Baker's fault. I mean, I've always loved Saadiq going back to the TTT days, but hearing Cosmo's mix of his work really put it all in perspective. Raphael Saadiq is a genius. Period. Just listen and you'll see. From Tony! Toni! Tone! & Stevie Wonder to Q-Tip & DJ Quik, he is just that dude.

So, without jumping further on his nuts...fast forward a couple days later and I'm driving around town bumping this CD. "Still Ray" came on and stayed on and that's when I knew I had to re-do it (now I know how Dre must've felt).
I came home and listened to it, figured out the piano part and played everything else from there. Once I was finished I called my man Miles Bonny to lay down vocals and trumpet like only he can and here it is, free for you.
